This year Project LEARN is Celebrating 36 Years of Teaching Reading.
Thanks to a "Make it Stick!" grant from The Saint Luke's Foundation, we are embarking on the project: 36 Years ~ 36 Stories. “36 for 36” tells the Project: LEARN story through the voices of its students, volunteers and teachers. To listen to the inspiring story of our student, Mark Williams, just click here. (It takes less than 3 minutes.)
For the project, Project: LEARN has partnered with National Public Radio’s StoryCorps, the nationwide initiative to record the lives of everyday people in sound. “36 for 36” will humanize the rich history of Project: LEARN, showing in a highly compelling way the changes it has made in the lives of people. Additionally, “36 for 36” will demonstrate how Project: LEARN improves lives permanently and for the better.
On September 1-3, 2010, (to coincide with International Literacy Day on September 8, 2010) eighteen pairs of individuals interviewed each other over a three-day period. The goal of the recordings is to tell the extraordinary stories of the Project: LEARN family and how their dedication enriched an entire community. Conducted by StoryCorps , the completed recordings will be sent to the Library of Congress and they will also become the property of Project: LEARN.
Starting December 2010 we will feature a different pair of story tellers each month.
"Just click on The Mark Williams Story to listen to the full 40-minute StoryCorps interview. I promise it will warm your heart." Barbara Watson, Basic Skills Director.
