Project: LEARN

2011

Mission, Purpose, Programs

Project: LEARN is Greater Cleveland’s oldest community-based youth and adult basic education program.  Founded in 1974, it is a private, non-profit tax exempt corporation that provides basic education to youth and adults 16 years and older who live in Cuyahoga County.  Project: LEARN offers basic reading, basic math, GED instruction, job placement and life skills programs in both one-to-one tutoring lessons and small group classes. Its purpose is to provide basic education and support services to adults so that they may attain self-sufficiency and independence. Its mission is “Literacy for Every Adult.”

Project: LEARN operates four programs:

Basic Skills provides instruction to students in beginning and intermediate reading and math.  Students can attend small group classes or receive instruction from trained volunteer tutors.  Basic Skills is a self-paced program designed to help students achieve their own specific goals.

Education First is a GED and job placement program that provides both educational and support services to individuals.  It has worked specifically with the formerly incarcerated as well as inmates within the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Education at Work provides basic, intermediate, and GED instruction to businesses and other organizations.  It is currently teaching clients of Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry and Vocational Guidance Services; it is also teaching employees of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center.

Reading Health is a consulting practice that offers technical assistance to health care providers helping them communicate more effectively with patients who have low education levels.  Its current partners are MetroHealth, St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, the Cleveland Department of Health and the Visiting Nurses Association.

In its 36 years of serving Greater Cleveland, Project: LEARN has achieved national recognition for its work (former First Lady Barbara Bush was the Honorary Chair of its fifteenth anniversary celebration) and has received many local awards, in particular the Anisfield-Wolf Award in 1990 as Cleveland’s most outstanding community service.

Project: LEARN has thirteen staff members (nine certified as teachers) and 50 trained volunteer tutors.  Four staff members work as Reading Health consultants.  Between 500-700 adults receive instruction annually.

Project: LEARN is a member agency of United Way and a contract agency of the Ohio Board of Regents.  It is also an affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide.
