Homesick for Grandfather

"I remember when I was five years old. Aunt Carrie and her family came to visit us. I wanted to go home with them and stay a week. My grandfather told them not to take me with them because I would cry to come home. I did alright Sunday night, but the first thing Monday I started to cry to go home.

Aunt Carrie got up early to cook breakfast before my uncles went to work.

Aunt Carrie’s biscuit was so white and not brown, so I didn’t eat. She went out to the field to pick cotton. I went down ‘side to the highway, trying to stop cars to take me home so I could see my grandfather. She came down ‘side the highway and got me. She said when my uncles came home from work that she was going to take me home. They stopped at the store and bought some food for us to eat. They took me over to her mother-in-law’s house that night to play with the kids.

Aunt Carrie must have thought that I had forgot about going home.

The next morning I started to cry to go home again. Aunt Carrie got tired of me crying to go home, so she took me home to my grandfather. She told them how I acted and grandfather said, “I told you not to take her.” She told my grandfather that I could stay with her no more.

I didn’t care. I was home with my grandfather. I loved my grandfather very much. He took my everywhere he went. I never stayed away from home no more until I grew up."
